Four and one. A record I don’t think anyone including myself would have predicted after Romo was laying on his back looking up at the stars after taking that awkward hit in Seattle about eight weeks ago. But here we are leading the division with a rookie quarterback who is playing at a level that again no one could have predicted. Match Dak Prescott’s play with Ezekiel Elliott leading the league in rushing, the defenses surpassing everyone’s expectations, and the offensive line getting back to their dominant form this Dallas Cowboys team is legit.
After a tough division loss to the New York Giants we witnessed a lot of change in the next week against the Redskins. The play calling was the the most noticeable change from week one to week two. Dez Bryant was used in a role that every great playmaking receiver should be used in, the offensive line and Zeke Elliott made great strides in the run game, and the defense made more big plays to change momentum. Now after five weeks like I stated above the Cowboys have four wins and only one loss at the top of the division in the NFC East. Everything seems to be going right for the Cowboys after the injury bug hit the team hard before and during the season. It’s remarkable that after all the injuries and suspension (Romo, Moore, Scandrick, Bryant, McClain, Collins, T.Smith, Lawrence, Gregory, and McFadden) that this team has a winning record much less leading the NFC East. The one thing this team is going light years better this year compared to last is the ability to make adjustments. From the coaching staff to the players when something isn’t working we are seeing something change to help the issues the team is having.
The most important thing for this team going forward is to continue to move the football the way they are doing so and to continue to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Sunday against the Bengals the Cowboys defensive line made Andy Dalton’s evening not a very good one. Dalton was sacked five total times with Ryan Davis’s sack being taken away due to a holding penalty. Outside of the five sacks Dalton was being hit all night Terrell McClain, Maliek Collins, Benson Mayowa, and Demarcus Lawrence took turns getting their hands on Dalton and knocking him around. The return of Lawrence and the presence he brings to the defense showed in a big way. Along with the defensive line having a field day the secondary played great and should be credited for getting some of the sacks. Morris Claiborne is playing at an extremely high level. Claiborne had a couple of holding penalties throughout the game but kept one of the best wide receivers in AJ Green in check for a majority of the game. Overall the secondary played great the entire game and has a tough opponent on Sunday against Aaron Rodger and the Green Bay Packers.
4-1 is a great start to the season that a lot of people had given up on before it even started but beating Green Bay in enemy territory would be a huge win and give the Cowboys the momentum they need in order to keep the division lead.
